With support from Lawrence Hall of Science and ChangeScale, a regional backbone organization for environmental education, five school district partnership initiatives for environmental literacy have been launched in the San Francisco Bay Area. This model brings together school districts with local community partners to improve educational outcomes through nature-based learning. Each partnership initiative develops a vision and districtwide plan to infuse nature-based learning into K-12 student learning. Educational outcomes involve the learning of core academic content such as Next Generation Science Standards and the development of environmental literacy through nature-based learning. Local non-formal environmental education providers and community-based organizations provide or support many of these learning experiences. In this session, we will share the core elements of the model and how it is has been implemented with one school district, the Alameda Unified School District. In 2017-18, we conducted a case study of this district partnership initiative to better understand how it has moved from its vision for environmental literacy for all students to implementation of K-12 nature-based learning and the challenges encountered along the way. We will provide time for participants to reflect on the local context in which they work and the potential role of school district partnerships in nature-based learning.
