Residential environmental education providers can have deep impact on the lives of young people as they spend multiple days with their classmates, sleeping away from home, sharing meals, engaging in hands-on science, and learning about local ecology in outdoor settings. These immersive experiences in nature open children’s hearts and minds to the wonders of the natural world and create a unique opportunity to support personal and interpersonal growth. NatureBridge is currently exploring how residential environmental education settings can best facilitate student participants’ practice of social and emotional learning (SEL) skills. With funding from the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, NatureBridge has convened a group of organizations to collaboratively work through the question of how to most effectively incorporate SEL frameworks, research, and preferred practices into residential EE programming. Known as the Residential Environmental Education Partnership (REEP), from fall of 2018 through fall of 2019, the collaborative will aggregate collective wisdom in the service of establishing common language and developing shared tools related to SEL in the context of residential EE. During this session, we will present our findings, share progress on the partnership, and engage participants in a discussion around best practices for our field.
